A stunning mid-century ceramic vase produced by Ilkra, Germany and designed by Hans Werner in the mid 1950s, part of a range he called "Kairo".
This vase has a lovely yellow matt glaze with hand-painted, smooth sepia brown lines forming a lattice like pattern over the vase. The vase is an attractive and unusual shape - like a 'double-gourd' shape, with a narrower middle and wider, curvy top and bottom section.
Kairo ware is often found with the majority of the vase covered in the brown glaze, with little yellow. This vase is possibly a rare example, both in its shape and with the brown lines being less and the yellow glaze more prominent.
The vase is in very good condition.
It has an impressed mark on the base for the design and form number and a printed "Foreign" but no fabric name. However I strongly feel that this was made by Ilkra Edel-Keramik in Germany, having studied other ceramic pieces from this factory.
The Ilkra or JLKRA factory was founded by Jacob Leo Knodgen in 1892. Hans Werner designed the Kairo range in 1956.
