This is a charming Chinese hand-carved figurine of a wise man or holy man - possibly representing Fu Xing - the chinese god of happiness and prosperity.
The colour and texture of the figurine suggests that it is made of soapstone.
The wise man is in traditional chinese dress of long flowing robes and hairstyle of a holy and wise man. He is also carrying a baton/scroll on one arm. He looks to his left, smiling benignly.
He is standing on a small block which is also carved with a plant motif, possibly a lotus flower.
It has been suggested that this figurine was intended as a Chess piece, but I am unable to confirm this.
The Chinese figurine was carved around the 1920s.
Approximate size is 13cm h and base 2.5cm x 2.5cm
