This is a rare studio pottery plate, called "Gazelles", in the celadon glaze, was designed by David Gordon Roberts Furse in 1933-4 for Ashtead Pottery.
The plate shows running and leaping gazelles in relief, around the wide rim of the plate.
Ashtead Pottery in Surrey, England was a ceramics factory established for disabled servicemen to work in. It was open 1923 until 1935 and during the short twelve years of production, wonderful ceramic pieces were made.
The plate is fully marked on the base with the Ashtead Pottery printed mark and design/glaze marks.
The plate is more like a shallow bowl. This one is in very good condition with very minor scratches in the bowl area of the plate, which can only be seen in strong angled light.
There are no chips or cracks.Approximate size:
22.5cm /9" diameter x 3.5cm depth.
There is an example of this plate in the Victoria and Albert museum in London. This plate would make a wonderful present for a collector of ceramics , from the era between the World War I and II.
